I private messaged the originator of this post, and posted a reply to it, but its in the mall section so not a lot of eyes on it...

can anyone explain in more detail how the installation works? i imagine the rivnuts are in the cupholder but im not sure how the screws go in and if its just carpet holding up the whole thing

I am pretty sure he installed the rivnuts in the plastic panel that attaches to the side of the center console skeleton.
However, to do this there has to be holes in the carpet as well.

OK, nice, I think I'm going to try this. I don't mind two small holes in the carpet

Two wide stick-on Velcro strips might work well to hold the cupholder in place and will not disturb the originality of the car

Have to agree with this solution. Even though they come with double sided tape to attach to the item, I'd glue the pins on to the cup holder. Then you're guaranteed a permanent mount. Then just hook these through the carpet.
