Hey guys, so my daughter cleaned up and painted her rebuilt transmission, and in the process, we removed the VSS... realizing that the one that was on there had a damaged connector end.

The way the transmission came together, they used the best parts from two transmissions to build one really good one (with new bearings and such). As it turns out though, they tended to use a few parts from the other transmission that weren't original... like the mechanical clutch slave arm, which we put back to the original one. I'm thinking they also swapped around the wrong vehicle speed sensor, assuming they were all the same.

So, questions:

1 - Does no one sell brand new vehicle speed sensors anymore? I do a search and the only thing that comes up looks like a knock sensor (clearly not gear driven). The two that I have, one is pretty mangled, and the other one is "ok" but the connector is bad. Anyone know where I can get a new one?

2 - Which gear am I supposed to use? I have a dark grey one, and a dark red one.

Thanks!!!

It basically tells me they're unavailable anywhere... which I unfortunately already saw when I was searching.

I don't see anything about the color gears though.

Lol, is Ole Joe illegally repoping them?

I just looked at the other one (which doesn't have a broken connector... and it's actually in pretty decent shape. Even the O-Ring gasket is good... it's just coated in like a half-inch of grease... so I'll just spend some time cleaning it up. I was hoping they were remaking them again.

I just need to know which gear now. I suspect the red one, but I am not sure. The grey one was the one in there when they rebuilt it... but I'm thinking that came from whatever other car it had.

This is a 2m4 SE w/ 14" wheels and the 215/60/14s... pretty sure that's the red gear (no idea what the grey gear is for). Anyone know for sure?

In the thread:

VSS speedo gears by tires sizes from the Fiero P22 parts manual. Pages 1-5 4.337 Group.
I combined all the data from all the years into this.
Looks like there are 2 VSS gears for manuals, and 2 for automatics.

In this thread, you can find your transmission and the 'colors' of the gears for the tire sizes.....

Thanks! Red it is! I wonder where they got this other transmission from... as in, what car it came out of. It had a gray gear in there.

EDIT: I should say, Purple is what I actually need (I have 215/60/14s on there), but I'm putting the RED one in there since that seems to be what came with the transmission, and will be as close as possible to what I need. I'll keep the gray one though for safe keeping... never know.
