I am in the process of changing the shimmy damper on my 86 GT and noticed a plug on the top of the rack and pinion. Should there be a grease fitting there? If so what kind of grease should be used?

You're probably seeing where an adjustment can be made.

Steering Rack bearing (play) adjustment. Help needed.

The Rack is Not made to have anything done including you adding whatever grease.

Many that try added the wrong grease or other lube and cause more problems in the future. Near Future depending on grease and other issues.

Don't try to fix unless you have right tools etc. before taking apart.
