Thanks to Fieroguru for the charts! I was looking for info on the G6 F-40 trans, as I have found one for relatively low cost.

As I am replacing my 2.5l Tech 4 with a 3800, I want to get a trans that will last a while, but I have limited budget to get it done.

If I am reading the charts correctly, a Getrag is the standard, any trans above the Getrag has a low gear ratio, any below have a high gear ratio.
The gear ratio affects both the launch and cruse RPM, and drag racing you want a low gear to launch quickly, and for fuel economy, you want a high ratio. But just how bad is the Pontiac G6 with the 3.55 final drive ratio? The info I am needing is the RPM of the car while cruising in 6th gear, and the first gear performance. I found opinions covering the spectrum, but not hard data.

As I am used to a SBC coupled to a differential with a 3.90:1 gear, the low gear was quick, and the cruise RPM was 2500 RPM at 60 MPH. But I doubt the F-40 has the same feel as the 3.90 gear in my Nova! The cruise RPM, I suspect, will also be lower, by a bit!

This gives you a direct comparison between the 282 Getrag and the G6 F40:

As for a comparative feel to your 3.90 geared Nova...
The stock G6/F40 launch ratio in 1st gear would be the same as running 5.03 gears with a 2002 Camaro T56, 5.30 gears with a TH350, and 6.05 gears with a M20 rock crusher 4 speed. Cruise RPM with the stock G6/F40 would be like running a 2.23 gears with the TH350 or M20 4 speed.

The 3.09 final drive swap has 1st gear launch comparable to a 2002 Camaro T56 with 4.39 gears and it really changes the feel of the car from being way over geared to just being aggressively geared. 6th gear cruise is like the 2002 Camaro with 3.80 gears

Wow! Thanks! Having the data in MPH makes the ratios mean something easier to understand.

I am having a very hard time finding a transmission in my area at a price I can afford! I don't want or need an entire car for the trans!

I need to start crawling around the local yards for a donor... Coming home covered in grease and oil, scaring the wife and fur kids!
