Wondering if anyone's running a Getrag 284 with their 3800's? Any issues?
Am in the process of doing a 3800 SC Series 3 swap, changing the cam, springs, full length headers, 3.2 Pulley, Spec Stage 3+ Clutch, Spec Flywheel and other goodies. I will not be tracking this. Just mainly for Street. I'm assuming i'll be somewhere around 380-400 HP.
So... I currently have a 5 Spd Getrag 282 transmission. Am concerned about it not being able to handle the load. I understand a lot of people have had good success with it as long as its not abused (and some have mated it to V8's).
I purchased a few items from Rodney's site for this Getrag 282 last year. However, I'm in the process of getting a 5 Spd Getrag 284 from a 93 Chevy Lumina.
Would these parts that I purchased for the Getrag 282 work with the Getrag 284?? Or have to get all different parts?
1 x Getrag V-6 5 Speed Transmission Replacement Cables 1 x Getrag V-6 5 Speed Transmission Replacement Cables 1 x V-6 5 Speed Getrag Aluminum Slave Cylinders 1 x Cast Aluminum Clutch Master Cylinders
Also, I think the Spec Flywheel might work with the 284?? But the Spec Stage 3+ Clutch will need to be changed.
I understand if I blow the 284, it will be very hard to find parts. Basically would need a whole replacement whereas with the 282 it will easier to get parts/fixed.
If anyone can provide some sound input would be greatly appreciated, Thank you!

The 284 was pretty much never "repairable in the field". If it broke, it was sent back to GM, and rebuilt, or a replacement was shipped out. (I suspect that, now, you would be SOL, unless you were to stumble across another one, as you did that one.) Of course, things may have changed, in the past few years. But I haven't heard anything about it. 282s are getting more difficult every day to find parts for. Not to say that they are unobtainium, but it's not as easy as it once was.
In terms of power/torque rating, I don't think there was a huge difference between the 282 and the 284. Of course, they went to the trouble to build them, so there must have been some advantage. There's also not a huge difference (in terms of numbers) with the F23, either. But they seem to be much more sturdy.
Sorry. I know that doesn't answer any of your "hard" questions.

Raydar, yes that’s the only thing I’m concerned with… if anything goes wrong with the 284, then parts would be hard to find or basically I would be out of luck if I can’t replace it with another unit --- not a luxury that is available. I do know there’ some gear ratio differences between the two and that the 284 is bit more stronger that the 282.
Will, that’s what I thought… that the 284 will not bolt up to the same mounts. The other thing is that I’ve already bought parts for the 282. And I think I will need a different Master and Slaye Clyinders as well?? If someone can confirm that.
If anyone's running a 3800 with 284 or regardless can share some knowledge, then that would be great as well --- like what else would be needed, issues, any tips, etc.
There is a guy over on LS1Tech that had converted his 3800 w-body to the 284. He is now swapping the 3800 for an LS4 and keeping the 284. He might be your best source of info for the 3800 adaption. https://ls1tech.com/forums/...s4-swap-project.html
I saw your replies on LS1 tech, while there is no 3800 5 speed W body bin file natively, all of the parameters are available in the bin file to set up a L67 as a five speed. If you do it, I would recommend wiring in a clutch anticipate switch to pin 18 of the clear connector for the PCM, with the switch going to ground, and changing the "transmission type" flag to "0".

no problem, you may need a DHP powertuner and Tiny Tuner, or Tunercat OBD2 (Jet DST) to change those parameters in the BIN file though. I think that's about as much help as I can provide in this thread though.

Sent you PM. Will try to find the shop that I saw with the 5 speed Z34 in Windsor. If I can track down their name, I will call them for you.
here are some in AB. Both are 284 trans. Since these transmissions are impossible to find, I would grab the whole car just to have a spare trans. Hard to justify the freight cost though..
I am definitely not an expert, but I would go with an F23 or F40 instead. Far more common, and easier to find parts if you do break something.
With the F23, first gear is useless with a 3800SC, but you can get the gearing changed to a later model F23 FY1 code for better gearing for 3800.
search the forum, there are some threads on the gear swap by much more knowledgeable people than myself. WCF sells an F23 swap kit that seems pretty solid- I bought one recently.
Good luck!
