I have a low mileage ( < 5Kmi ) 88 GT. Today when I went to roll down the driver's window, it went down normally until about 1/3rd of the way down. Then it stopped and started making popping noises. It rolled back up perfectly fine. So I can roll it up and down just fine for 1/3rd of the way but it won't go past the top 1/3rd down. I tried pushing with my hand while holding the switch down but it won't go past that point. I'm assuming if there were just a bad tooth or something pushing would have let me get past that point.

If it were one of my daily driver's with higher mileage, I'd just assume the motor was bad, but since the Fiero (and window motor) is practically brand new and the motor is lightning quick as always (except only for the top 1/3rd), I have a hard time believing the motor is worn out. The car has always been kept either covered or garaged so no debris would have fallen inside the door.

My forum search turned up basically just how to replace the motor. I saw one other thread with a similar symptom of the popping but it was never resolved.

Any thoughts? Anyone have similar symptoms

reinhart,

After 30+ years, I would expect that the grease in the mechanism has hardened due to age alone.....and the nylon gear set to have become brittle. I bet you have some broken teeth and you will need to R&R your window regulator to resolve your

problem.

Please let us know what fixes it, and

Regards,

Larry

Did you take off the door panel, if so did you put the (correct short cut off door panel pug in the bottom left corner) if you didn't and put a full plug in that position the white window stops will hit that plastic push plug and make a popping sound.

Hello I haven't messed with anything with the door. It was working perfect one day and the next time I went to drive it, it's limited on down travel and popping when it gets to that point.

Is it possible something fell off in there and is blocking the down travel?

Is the popping some sort of over-voltage off switch?

Anyone have this popping issue and identified it before? Surely I can't be the first ever (other than that one thread I found in the archives where it's never resolved)?

Weird how I've never had a window motor go bad owning 5 Fieros over 30 years yet this one that I don't drive has a window issue?

I'd hate to have to tear into this door but if I do, I'd at least like to know what the problem is so I'm not drilling out rivets or something for no reason.
