The 4T60e on my 4.9L 85GT was D.O.A. and I ordered a remanufactured unit but it has yet to show up. A friend recommended that I cancel and go with a salvage yard unit that can be had for $200-$300. The remanufactured units are $1,600, a bit steep for my taste. Some cars end in in up a junkyard because of accident damage but others are there with blown engines and/or transmissions. Anyone here have any luck with junkyard automatic transmissions? The junkyards around here puncture the gas tanks and drain them so you can see them run.

Don't know about USA but I've had luck with a THM125C from a local (yes) Grand Am for parts. When I changed the fluid on it, well it was looking very fresh and runs for some years now without problems. You never know though.

I think you answered your own question. Find a transmission that is still in the car.....and the car must be mashed up. Then you know the trans was good right to the end.

That obviously makes the most sense. I'm finding some decent deals on re-manufactured units but the 4T60e had more than a dozen different variations that had small changes as in the sprockets, final drive ratios and TC stall speeds. I guess the guy that I had set up to do the trans will get the nod.
