New to Fiero's but have been working on cars for years. Looked through searches and couldn't find anything helpful. Just swapped in a junkyard 5-speed Isuzu in to replace a blown up 4-speed. Everything has been fixed and shifts great 1-5 WITH AND WITHOUT CABLES.
However, I cannot get the car to shift into reverse no matter what I do. Cables have been adjusted numerous times to try and help and tested with them disconnected. It just won't go into reverse. Ran 1-5 on jack stands and no weird noises or anything. I'm thinking the trans reverse gear is bad or something, any suggestions?
With the cables completely disconnected I cannot get it into reverse. Goes into 5th fine but can't go into reverse.
Well, that does not sound good. I'm aware that Isuzu's 2nd gear can pack it in, but I'm not familiar with any Reverse issues. Perhaps a transmission expert can chime in here.
Since you're new to Fieros, I'll throw this out. The 4-speed has reverse located to the left and forward, up beside First Gear. The Isuzu has reverse located to the far right and back, down beside Fourth Gear.
Did you flip the selector over if its not from a Fiero?
Probably dumb question but you are not going 5th to reverse are you? It will lock out.
Sorry not sure what you mean by selector, the trans is from a 2.5 fiero same year.
I am not specifically going reverse from 5th, just know they are on the same shift fork which is why I included that. I've heard some people have broken shift forks and then they can't get into 5th or reverse when that one is broken. But my 5th works fine.

Yes, did know that. Same pattern as my Wrangler. Appreciate the help though.

Sorry, what do you mean by packing it in? Never heard that phrasing before. But yes not sounding too good, I'm thinking it's reverse gear gone out but not 100% since I feel like it should at least grind or something. It's almost like I can't get past the reverse lockout.

Quitting, or perhaps moreso in this scenario... failing. I was originally going to say "goes away", as 2nd gear just isn't there anymore when it fails, but I thought maybe that phrase might've confused you!

Haha gotcha, I figured that's what you meant but didn't want to assume. Thanks for the reply
It's always appreciated when people make the effort to report back and bring some closure to a thread. It might help the next person who experiences the same problem. So thanks.
If anyone cares, it ended up just being a really stuck reverse shift fork. Slammed super hard into reverse and it works just fine now.
How exactly were you able to slam it in? At the trans or at the shifter itself? Mine just lost it in winter and then came back randomly but has once again gone away.
