On the shifter assembly inside the cabin, I didn't even have to pull the skeleton. Simply by removing the blank-off plate (for the power mirrors and power windows my Fiero doesn't have), I was able to gain access to the clip that is hidden below. I'm not sure if the wiring for the power accessories would have been in the way.
For other folks who may stumble upon this thread (Archive-searchers), here is the correct orientation of the clips:

I just looked at the select cable on my Getrag and its turned the other way. I remember my 4 speeds being turned the other way because I inserted a flatblade screwdriver under the lip to pry them up then I would drive them back on until the lip seated down. Same on the automatic cable. The flats on the U part of the clip should be against the mount.
It looks like there are several versions of clips. The one I have in my tool bin has raised edges that are turned away from the direction of the top tab. The flat area that fits into the cable ferule groove is toward the direction of the tab like pm shows. It could be aftermarket but its an old one and came off a Fiero.

Here is an extra clip from my collection of parts:
All of my shift cable clips look like that one, including the ones in the cabin.
This is an auto-to-manual swap, so I never saw what it's supposed to look like from the factory; I pieced together the parts from different places. I can't be sure the clips are OEM.

That is the clip I have on my 87 select cable and also in my parts bin. The up side goes against the bracket. It mostly stays on the cable because the opening is slightly rounded like a C clip.
That way it works like a spring clip and will hold tighter and never vibrate loose and fall out. That orientation also allows you to grab onto them with adjustable pliers on the top tab to wiggle them loose.
The P22 Parts Book shows orientation facing away from the bracket. It is the same at the transmission end and typical for all shifter cables.
