I am in the process of restoring the electrical in a 85 GT. For some reason the dash dimmer switch when fully engaged activates the lights that come on when the door is ajar. I have the dash removed to aid in tracing the wires. Does anyone have any guidance on tracing what is going wrong?

Thanks.

Would you be able to tell me if the car has to be running for the backlight to work? I attempted to turn on the backlight in the first ignition position with no effect.

1985 Fieros did not have backlit gages, they were illuminated by reflection.
The headlight switch must be in the parking light or headlight position.
