I have a 1987 GT with a V8 SBC TPI engine and my SI alternator is bad and I am upgrading to a CS version. I was checking the AC compressor pulley and one time I spin it and it made a grinding noise, then another time it spins smooth like butter, bottom line I do not trust it and I am not using AC currently anyway.

Is there a AC delete type pulley that could go in ts place? I could just pull it and run a shorter belt but then it would be straight from crank pulley to alternator only as I am using a remote electric water pump and something tells me this belt routing may not be ideal. Although belt wrap would be better. A belt tensioner it its place would be nice as well.

I did some searching but did not find much on removing AC at all. I might go back to a functioning AC system in the future maybe even over the winter non driving months but for now I need to take advantage of every day I can driver her.

Maybe one of these would work.

Thanks for the assist.

I was hoping for more of a part number for a idler pulley to replace the AC compressor. Should be the same for anyone who has done this with the HR6 compressor regardless of engine. I'll take some measurements on the mounting holes and continue searching.

A belt wrapped around only two pulleys is perfect... no need to complicate things further.

Maybe the best option is to just replace the bearing in what I have.

Now you're talking! Is the compressor from the Fiero, or the V8 car? The bearing comes off with the pulley. The bearing is like $20.

Bearing:

Autozone and probably other stores have the tools as part of their Loan-A-Tool program. Depending on the store, they might even let you just work on the compressor right there on the counter.

Or just replace the compressor
