I am thinking of putting a series 3 supercharger on my series 2 engine. I am told they are more efficient and make more boost. Is this true? Also is it a direct fit? I have heard that it is as long as I use the lower intake with it.

Correct. A Gen V supercharger with a 3.4" pulley will make upwards of 10 psi of boost. If you do this, plan on adding an intercooler.

You think I will need to add an intercooler with the series 3 SC? Why?

You will if you go down to a 3.4" pulley.

Absolutely correct. A Gen V supercharger with a 3.4" pulley is like putting a 3.2" pulley on the Gen III supercharger. That's intercooler territory.

Series 2 and series 3 superchargers displace the same amount of air per revolution.

That is technically correct but consider that the series III engine made 20 more horsepower than the series II with the same valve timing very minor differences to the ports and with the new supercharger. The gen V supercharger on the series III engine was modified to be more efficient.. The Gen V has larger air inlets, air outlets, ports inside the case and uses a larger throttle body.
While the displacement is the same the Gen V moves air at a lower temperature so dense air moves through it. In other words put heated air in a cylinder at a high temperature. I call that thin air. Now do the same with cooler dense air. Now wait for both to reach room temperature. The tank with the cooler dense air will take much longer to discharge.
