I was doing some work on the Fiero today, and ran into a familiar situation...I did not have the correct size tool to accomplish the task. I would like one thread that describes what type and size of fasteners are used on our cars, for an easy to check resource for planning our work. It would have saved me a trip to the store while the car was apart. Please contribute what you can, I will go first.

Fasteners and thread sizes are different . If you are looking for thread sizes the special banjo bolts on the caliper are 10mm x 1.5. Wrench size 7/16" or 11mm but that may be different on the 88. In general if you have metric wrenches in sizes 10mm, 13mm, 15mm, 17mm and 18MM you should be able to do 90% of the repair work on a Pontiac Firo

Yup... 15mm and 18mm are the 2 sizes missing from common wrench/socket sets.
Sets will usually go from 6 up to 13, 14, 17, 19
But you can often buy a single wrench/socket at better stores if your sets are missing them.

Maybe very cheap sets. Most I've seen have 15mm but nearly all are missing 16mm 18mm. Many use near by SAE wrench but isn't same and often rounds off whatever.
Most 1/2" drive sets small size is 8mm or 9mm. Most 1/4" drive ~ 5mm to ~ 13mm
Fix Wrench sets often depends what type. 5 piece Flare wrenches have most common size nuts used and ends are set so can use two wrenches to fix many things like Fiero fuel filters. Many of them don't have 9-11mm and 16-18mm.
Chrysler also uses a lot of 18mm and have so since at least the 80's.

GM loves T10 T15 and T50 for most things But some others are used too like T30 for door skin bolts. Think T45 or T47 for Ebrake brackets for 84-87 rear calipers but god help you when you mess w/ them because most threads will strip before reaching torque spec. (Many rebuilt have the brackets attach. Get them is best.) Ford has use T50 for seat belts since the 70's.

Many times can use "wrong" size or SAE on Metric part to remove rusted heads/nuts.
Many are temped to use Allen wrench on Torx head... If works, just got lucky. Most times strips the heads and real tools then have problems or worse strips head tool or both.

Note also that whatever tools you buy for the Fiero will also work on any of millions of other GM cars. 7mm, 10mm, 13mm 15mm, 18mm and 19mm sockets will cover most fasteners since they introduced metric fasteners, what, 40? years ago. Plus an occasional 5.5mm for your ignition module screws and some other fasteners.

I did recently have to buy a 12mm for my Chevy Cobalt, and that was one I'd never needed before. My socket set didn't even have one.
