My 198k mile Formula appears to have broken its timing chain.

It's not my favorite engine, and not what I wanted to do this weekend, but if I can just "toss" a timing set into it, that would be better than moving up plans for a 3900/F23 swap.

I think so, but that's a guess.

Tomorrow evening (but not today) I'll have access to a pair of 2.8 Fiero heads, so I'll be able to measure the distance from the machined head gasket surface to the valves.

Standard head gasket is 0.040" thick, and the piston is 0.026" (says 60degreev6.com) in the hole.

The heads I have are old, so they will have some valve seat recession, but they have less miles than yours do.

You can probably find valve lift specs with a search of the forum.

If they are an interference engine, we would have heard of it by now....

Just line up the timing marks when putting a new chain on and call it a day plus all the gaskets that need to be replaced as well. Now getting to all that is another story.

Distance, closed valve to machined gasket face on head.

Approx. 155k miles.

Intake: 0.360"
Exhaust: 0.330"

Measurement confidence (consider that I held the slide caliper feedhand, and there was still some carbon on the head):
Most probably the above measurements are within +/- 0.015" of the truth.
