I'm having a hard time locating a power door lock relay. When I push either lock or unlock the relay makes a clicking noise and the locks don't actuate. I've contacted Fiero Store and Fiero Factory and neither have one and strangely was told by one that no one has ever looked for one so I guess this is the first Fiero power door lock relay to ever go bad. As that isn't very likely I'm hoping someone knows of a source or maybe even has one they can sell.
If the relay is clicking, it may be working. The problem I had was just rusted rods in the door. Do the actuators move the locks at all. Try putting your ear next to the door where the latch is when you hit the button. If you hear anything there, take the panel off and lube the rods leading from the handle to the actuator.
Are you referring to the silver circuit breaker, 2nd up from the right bottom of the fuse panel? If you are, I have a spare one, but in the meantime to test it, pull the one above it for the power windows, if you have power windows, and insert it in the door lock slot to see if that cures the problem.
If it's a relay, where's it located and the number on it. I have 2 or 3 dozen various Fiero relays.
The relay is mounted on the passenger side underneath the dash up high on the right kick panel. If you have the factory subwoofer, you'll have to remove it to access that relay. If you dont have the sub, grab a flashlight and poke around while pressing lock/unlock...you'll hear it clicking away.
Like the other guys said, more than likely the problem is with the rods and mechanism inside the door. The parts tend to get cruddy over time which makes them drag. If you take the door latch mechanism out and clean it well with brake cleaner or other degreaser, sometimes that works.
Sometimes the 30 year old electric lock actuators get weak. If you have to replace them, only buy the AC Delco units which are available on Amazon or Rockauto. I tried two Dorman brand actuators (which i've always had good luck with)...neither had the strength to move the rods far enough to unlock the doors. They would lock, but not unlock. Let us know what you find.
After cleaning the rods and mechanism inside the door, lube the guide areas with synthetic brake slider grease. It won't harm the plastic guides and it holds up well under some adverse conditions. I was using Syl-Glide Brake Slider Grease where plastic parts were involved, but have since changed to Permatex Ceramic Extreme Brake Parts Lubricant.
