We've got this 1984 Fiero and absolutely love it. We need to purchase a replacement fuel vapor canister for the car, though (not the filter). We were told that a Borg Warner CP1038 is a replacement for the original Pontiac part #17075840. The problem is that we can't find any supplier of the Borg Warner canister.
We're hoping someone else here has some suggestions. The best we've located is one used one in Alabama. We live in CA with really strict emissions controls. Thanks for any assistance.
The part mentioned at the racing location is actually a SMP (Standard Motor Parts, also available at Rock Auto) CP1038 and that part does not fit the 1984 Pontiac Fiero (or any other Fiero actually). Yes, we did search. We need a Borg Warner CP1038, which is a completely different company and different part. There's one that pops up at Amazon, but it looks like the part might be discontinued.
And yes, we do need this part for the strict emissions controls out here in California or the vehicle will not pass the smog test at its next registration.
I've contacted several parts companies and the Borg Warner company directly to see if there is a supplier for this part.
If the other brands have the same ports, couldn't it be used by fabricating a different mount or modifying the present mount? They all should function the same.
Go to any junk yard and look in any old GM car. Part was used for many GM cars in the 80's. Some have this hidden in a "case" to protect it. Follow 2 vac lines and 1 fuel vent line going into a bigger can/case on the frame, inner fender, etc.
If bottom filter is bad is a Frame "filter" # BA3865 to replace the floss. Can get them RA and many others. can likely find floss to make one at fabric, fish, or hobby stores. Filter is there just to keep big crap plugging the bottom.
Note that GM Part Numbers can and does change... 22P list that as 17075840 but GM long since charge the PN.

Thank you for the additional suggestions. It is not the filter that is bad. The seal on the canister has broken. The entire canister needs to be replaced.
We are definitely looking to see if this part can be taken from a different model. There are some 1986 Fieros in the Pick and Pull lots about 2 hours out. That's our next call - to check with them to see if there's an interchangeable part.

All basically work the same but Making one to fit likely won't pass in CA and some other states.
Some states still forces to pass EVAP test for old cars. This includes pinching off Fuel Vent tube at the EVAP can. If can doesn't look OEM then except to fail.
EVAP test is testing 2 parts. Gas Cap test to see if it's good. Tank test to see tank and fill/vent lines do not leak pressure. This is why the pinch the vent line to EVAP can. Problem is have to make sure the line is closed or you fail. Is why you go to inspection on slow days. Guys then have time to check the clamp tool is tight and test again before they fail you.
Many New cars can tell you if cap is loose because EVAP test is built into the car and set MIL light on when cap is loose/bad etc. (Is why new car w/ MIL on = checking the cap as first step. Is light goes off then likely just the cap. Go to AZ etc for free scanning later just to be sure.)

Second, if they are the same, and you can't find one locally, I can go to a local JY and pick one up for you.....When there is one to go to....(At the moment there are not any closer than south San Jose...)

All Fiero are same and in same location for 85-88. Same part for 84 but mounting might be a bit different. 1 bolt to release the can, 2 I think to remove the bracket.
FWD cars listed have same part but often mounted "hidden" in/on car's engine bay sheet metal.
If stuck, Don't pull the lines off the plastic. If you can't pull rubber off metal lines then cut the rubber so you don't break the can. Heat and UV in a Fiero can make the plastic brittle and easy to break. In FWD, Heat could still get to the plastic but FWD hood protect for UV.
cvxjet, thank you for the offer. Actually, we're in the Central Valley and can make the trip. Looks like there are some Fieros (not 1984 models) in some of the pull it yourself yards.

Thanks Sardonyx, we've been to several auto stores and are still checking. They aren't even sure. Part of the problem is that the part has been discontinued (original part and it looks like the Borg Warner might also have been discontinued). I've got a call pending to the Borg Warner headquarters and the guy at the local AutoZone and at the local O-Reillys have calls in to their parts gurus for us.
Sorry people, To horror I find out that 07021743 (7021743 in some books) is ONLY the filter on the bottom of the EVAP can. Not the whole unit.
GM parts web sites and Ebay only list this part and pointed to the can in whatever diagram and list diagram number match the can too... So can in diagram (87 4cyl) is 48... the filter shows as 48 and can isn't listed at all. (87 V6 is 72) Can is Not even shown as discontinued farther down on some site. Make it very hard to figure out. Worse many parts don't have picture so no help that way.
Frame made the filters and sold for < $5
If you need a can then look for old 22p # for the can. You can use same list for the filter to looking for other cars in junk yards.
GM often charge # so many times and 22P never listed the filter only. so I thought did same this time but no. Sorry again.

Yes Nemiga echos 22P but look at most GM parts sites and only list a filter for the can, that's if they list anything at all. You get Zero results search 17075840 too.

Good it's fixed but Just How did Amazon help? I order parts w/ them but had PN to find them. Even ACdelco Dorman and Standard "books" don't vapor cans for Fiero

It looks like many dealers just slap a name on a site but all run the same backend service by 1 or 2 companies or even GM contact company. I've seen this selling other things. Barcode readers sites are cookie cutter sites too.

Amazon Borg list as CSV... So you can try to find used parts in other GM cars. Many have this part hidden for crash safety etc. Follow 2 vac lines to frame or body. Copy/past this quote section into notepad etc the save file as EvapCanList.csv You can then double click to open in excel etc
