I have an 88 that has an aftermarket keyless entry/power locks setup. I haven't been in to see the wiring, but sometimes, depending on the door lock position, the car won't crank. When I turn the key I get a very loud click noise and then nothing. If I turn the key to the off position and then wait for the doors to do their autolock procedure the car will usually fire right up. Sometimes I have to turn the key off, hit the unlock button on the keyfob, and then wait for the lock to reset before it will let me crank the car. The car didn't come with power locks so I'm pretty sure the whole system was added on later. Anyone have a clue on how to fix this?
Sounds like a power or grounding issue without really knowing how it was all wired in. Are you positive its not a weak battery? That would be a simple fix.
Thanks for the response. I had the battery test a while back and it came up as good. Not that I've completely ruled it out, but the last test was showing it as good and the issue was happening even with the battery testing as good.
Find the control module (likely under the dash, or near the radio) and get the make / model off it. You should be able to look up the specs online. There may even be a setting that you can turn off to stop it disabling your ignition (if that is what is happening).
