Even though my car is low mile, the totally original stereo didn't' sound too great. And it didn't sound too great for the usual reasons (deteriorated material), though the rear pillar speakers were still nice:

So I bought these
http://www.car-speaker-adap.../items.php?id=SAK093

And these:
https://www.polkaudio.com/products/db5252
https://www.polkaudio.com/products/db462

The 4x6s fit perfect in the pillars with a very slight trim of the plastic holder, I didn't take any pictures.

Here's the plates as I got them, a few manufacturing nubs to remove but the material is easily shaved. It seems to be made of some kind of low density plastic not too hard, but not too soft either:

Plate test fit, really hard a hard time believing you could fit good 5.25s there but....

How the speaker sat with no cutting, not going to work

So, a trimming we go. The only place I had to trim, and really only a little was in the bottom inside corners:

But after the trimming you can see that these speakers would interfere with the dash plate sitting back down flush:

All I had to do was trim a little bit of the speaker's lip which on these is plastic:

Now it sits flush:

Next I cut the holes for the tweeters:

There's not a lot of space to drill new holes to screw down the speakers on that end so I just used some double sided tape:

Now fully installed:

And that's it, now I have made my stereo great again. If you do this, you're going to love it. Its true

Very nice. I was looking into doing a component speaker up front but was unsure how I wanted to do the tweeters. I like your idea there.

Another variation to this method is to mount the plates under the dash. This allows the speakers to mount lower and helps with fitting coaxial speakers under the stock covers.

Both sides needed a little work with the heat gun to reshape the HVAC ductwork to clear the magnets:

Painted with some foam weather stripping to seal the low spots:

Speaker installed again:

If anyone needs the original plans to cut your own plates, I have the original file from a long time ago......although $10.99 for those plates pre-cut isn't bad at all.

price isn't bad, though they appear very thick. Would have been benifical to be made of thinner abs for fitment.

I don't think I'd want plastic plates any thinner. Metal would be OK though as per above, but seems like double the work for undermount.

Anyway they fit fine except for the trimming of the speaker which is proved doable the Polks. Most if they have a lip like that should be able to be trimmed. Many don't even have a "gasket" surface like that.

I wouldn't do a metal plate. Also most aftmarket adapters are half thickness. I wouldn't ever recommend cutting a speaker. . Also you could potentially have the cone touch the cover with how close it sits.

That tiny amount of the plastic bit isn't going to hurt the speaker. the material is there to mount against a flat surface to seal it, not to hold the speaker surround to the basket. Cutting it in that small spot did not disturb the speaker glued to the basket in this particular speaker. Others who knows.

I fitted these a few years back and sound great - just a direct swap out

https://www.amazon.com/Perf...0-Watt/dp/B000MIN0NO

I then added a set of technics for the rear again just a direct swap out.

the difference is night and day - the thing to remember technology has moved on since our cars were built.
