I was removing the wires on my L67 starter today and the small stud for the signal wire broke off. The solenoid portion of the starter looks to be in pretty rough shape since it was near the exhaust for a few years. Is it possible to just replace the solenoid without removing the large starter body?

It can be done, but most people find it easier to remove the entire starter, and as long as you have it off the car, replace it.

Should be about $60 - $75.....$US. Don't know what the exchange rate is doing these days.

Yep, I just found the solenoids on rockauto so it looks doable. I might just take mine apart and see if I can replace just the stud that broke.

I have got to agree, working in those cramped spaces is a good way to hurt your hands. Pull the starter and the solenoid comes with it, and if you chose just to replace the solenoid do yourself a favor and have the starter tested before reinstalling, most parts stores now will do that for free. Be a real pain to have to take it back out because the starter goes after you replace just the solenoid a few weeks down the road. O'Reilly's does and give you the test results on paper so then you can decide if it is worth it.

Thanks for the advice guys. You're right, the whole thing drops with two bolts so I'm going to remove it tonight.

Don't forget before doing anything else to disconnect the battery, then the wires going to the solenoid, then the mount bolts if you can in that order. If you don't you may short the battery out.
