I 'm going to get my 1988 Fiero Formula back on the road this Summer and have been trying to locate a rebuilt steering rack for it. I was originally going to do this several years back, and at that time they were everywhere. I could buy one from eBay, or most of the Fiero sites, etc., for roughly $300. Now that I'm FINALLY having time for the rebuild, I'm not finding these units anywhere! There's one floating around eBay for $995, which is a joke, so now what? Any suggestions - short of rebuilding it myself? Thanks in advance!

Rack Doctor is where I bought my Camaro rack.
Fiero racks were obscenely expensive, last time I checked.

Maybe different now. Good luck.

I was going to say I got a rebuilt rack from eBay for just over $200. But my Fiero is an '87. Apparently, the '88 steering rack carries a price premium. Wow...

What's wrong with your 88 rack?

You don't need a lot of parts to rebuild the rack.
You can get these from Rodney Dickman
http://rodneydickman.com/ca...cda433e6c637b37a960f
Inner tie-rod ends
Outer tie-rod ends (not included with most rebuilds anyway)
Passenger side bushing
Upper and lower pinion bearings

Lower bearing problem in 88 racks.

I bought 2 "rebuilt" 84/87 Fiero racks and had nothing but problems.
One "rebuilt" rack from carsteering.com never had the inner tie-rod ends replaced.
One end was worn (loose) the other was practically seized. So what DID I pay for?
Loose inner tie-rod end from "rebuilt" rack and new one I purchased from parts store.

The other "rebuilt" rack (Cardone) has a pinion that moves up/down about 1/2 inch.
I think it's missing (or broke) the snap ring that holds the pinion gear bearing down.
It took quite a while to track down the looseness in the steering. (didn't expect "rebuilt" rack to be the problem)

I can't speak for the OP. But I replaced the steering rack in my Fiero because the rack itself was deteriorating. Somehow water made it in there, and rust started eating away the teeth on the rack. The reman unit that I bought came with new inner tie rods, new rubber boots, and new rack bushings. And it's tight as a virgin. So I don't think all reman units should be painted with the same brush.

I just checked rackdoctor.net and saw that the price for the '88 rack is $1,179.95! That is the most ludicrous thing I have ever encountered with a car part. I think I may have to go the Rodney route and rebuild it myself. The original problem was looseness in the rack that wouldn't allow the car to pass Pennsylvania state inspections. Replacing the bushing should solve that, but it isn't too much more money to replace the inner tie rods as well.
