I'm looking to buy an 872m6 dirt cheap however, the rear subframe where the a arm attached to the frame is rusted. Haven't seen the car or location of the damage but could it possibly be cut and re welded..thanks

If there's some, there's more.

Probably a lot more and not just in the cradle.

Pull up the trunk carpet and check for rust anywhere.
Also, pull the rear wheel well liners and look up, the frame rails are there and they probably look like swiss cheese

I'd say it's worth taking a look at.

My car had some bad rust at the sub frame on the left side. It wasn't right where the arm connects, but in between the two connection points. 2 sides of the bar were rusted through. Cleaned it up and had it welded, and haven't had any issues since.

My car was a summer car (up until I bought it...), and the rest of it is really clean. No more rust anywhere. What can happen sometimes is that mud. crap, and salt will get in through the hole in front of the control arm mounting points, and all that crap makes it rust faster.

Yeah, the rest of the car could be all rusted, but you could get lucky like me. If it's close, go take a look.

Talk to Napoleon_Tanerite...he has a rust free '88 spaceframe available. (Check out his thread in the General Fiero Chat section). Maybe you could pick them both up and do a frame swap. A lot of effort, but end result would be nice....

This fella originally thought the rust on his Fiero was "localized".

The thing is, the rest of the car does not have much rust. The rest of the frame rail looks good (from the bottom) and the other side is fine. Everything in the front of the car is good too. This issue seems to be that the car sat for a long period of time and this one area seems to have gotten the brunt of the rust.

Perhaps you should read the rest of the thread HERE. Might save you a lot of trouble!

Although Fiero's seem to be able to tolerate a lot of rust and it's not as hard as you might think to make repairs to the subframe there is nothing at all to say that a lack of rust in one area should give you confidence in the state of the rest of the spaceframe. I had a radiator brace on one side that was all of a piece while the other one just inches away was pretty much dust. I think all of us should be taking things apart to paint and repair the spaceframe on a regular basis. An inspection camera might be a good investment. I'd like to see alloy spaceframes and/or replacement parts, like rails.
