So I had a little bit of wet weather this morning that was just enough to make is slicker than normal. Long story short, I had too much power going around a corner and the rear broke loose causing a little bit of corrective steering. Part of my reaction had me smacking the cruise control lever hard enough to break the at the point where the rod inserts into the column. I don't believe I broke the switch because I can still use the turn signals and if I hold the stalk in place I can operated the wipers/washer. My question is if anyone has broken the stalk at the same spot as me and was able to remove the broken piece without removing the steering wheel.

Already ordered another stalk, but have a busy couple of weeks ahead of me so trying to see if some time can be saved.

Is there enough of the stalk left that you can get a pair of plyers or vice grips on it? If so, grab ahold of the "stub" and turn it towards you (sitting in the seat) it should come out. There is a bunch of good info online including a few how to do video's on how to replace the stalk. I just did mine --- took me a couple of beers and about 20 min.

Look down on the steering column where the stalk wire is plugged in. Pull out the connector. Attach a strong piece of string or a piece of light wire and wrap the connector with a light layer of electrical or duct tape. Pull the stalk out slowly and watch that you have the correct wire. The wire with the connector will come out and take the string/wire with it. Attach this to the new stalk wire and use it to pull it through the column and down to where it needs to be plugged in. This is the only way that I know of to replace the stalk without disassembling anything.
