I have an 86 GT that was doing the oil pressure needle dance. I bought a oil pressure sensor (threaded on one side with one prong on the other. I was informed that this wasn't the right part and that I needed the sending unit instead. Are both of these on the V6 engine? What does one do that the other doesn't? Since I still have the new sensor, is it easy to install and how? Thanks! bb
I only know of 1 oil pressure sender on the 2.8 engine and it sits near the thermostat housing. That particular sender is crap. You might as well upgrade to the 88 version. You will need the pigtail to go with it and a splice kit. Very easy to do. "A child could do it."

I'm just wondering what it was that I purchased from Rock Auto, then. They list both a sensor and sending unit, the latter of which is more expensive. I'm soooooooo confused!
Some of the auto parts stores list the little round button type sender used on the Dukes as being the one for the V6. Maybe Rock Auto shows that as an option. I've found the same listing at NAPA and AutoZone. Sometimes looking like this one, but with a single terminal. https://www.rockauto.com/ca...9095&jnid=482&jpid=1
Many socket's contact are bad. When true, you need a new socket. switch to 88, See my Cave, Oil Sensor

you probably bought a sending unit used for an" idiot light", not a gauge, they pedel them on ebay listed to work on a fiero, absolutely worthless. been my experience that all the gauge senders whether they be 84-87 or a 88 all fit and work the same except you have to rewire for the 88. I have a stock '86 2.8 sender in my 3.8SC and it works just fine.
This is my one gripe with RockAuto: they don't seem to know what fits our Fieros, so they just hope they get it right. If they don't, it's sometimes tough to get a return / refund. Buyer beware... bb
I ordered both my harness pigtail and 88 sender from Rock Auto. Got the right parts. Had to return the sender because it was shorted and would kill the battery in a couple of days of not driving the car. After a little negotiation about shipping and payment, they sent another once they had a return tracking number, without us having to do a new purchase and a refund on my credit card. I was happy to pay the return postage.
Rock Auto isn't the only vender that has problems with the correct parts. The information they have in their systems comes from the manufacturer or distributor. I've encountered the problem with temp sensors, slave cylinders, master cylinders and other parts, across the board with Advance, AutoZone, ORielly, NAPA, Parts Geek, and CarQuest stores.
