Is the rubber sleeve that goes over the fuel pump necessary?
My fuel pump quit so I took it out and the rubber sleeve had turned into a
black goo, and part of it had broken away in chunky goo.

I have cleaned the tank but don't want to have to do it again because of the sleeve.
The pump was less than five years old.

Thank you in advance.

Things that turn into black goo in the fuel system are not made out of the right material for sitting in gasoline. If you are talking about the fuel line, it must be the 'submersible' kind. What is a sleeve? Do you have a picture?

Some Fiero fuel pumps have a rubber sleeve over the pump itself, to reduce noise. The sleeve is supposed to be submersible, but maybe some aren't. But in any case, it is not necessary. The old one in my 86 SE had a sleeve -- the new replacement did not, and it has worked fine for years.

What condition was the short piece of hose on the assembly? Or did yours have the pulsator?

That's a non-Fiero assembly I found on the 'net, but it's a similar setup.

If the new pump comes with one then use it. If not then do not worry about it. The new pumps are designed much better than the old pumps. My Bosch replacement pump even said to remove the pulsator as the new pump is a different design and does not use it.

Do replace the fuel sock though. That thing prevents sucking big bits into the pump.

It has a pulsator on it. (1986 GT)

It was the sleeve that covers the pump itself that deteriorated.

I am going with the Bosch replacement and will not use the pulsator.

I will also replace the fuel strainer and fuel filter.

Thanks for all the replies
