where is the best place to get a decent price for Plexiglass or lexan for a chop top rear window ? search has nothing on chop top rear anything. Thanks
On my chop top, I took a pattern to a local glass shop. They cut it, smoothed the edges, etc and it was around $40. I wish I had been able to get glass side windows. But for the rear, my thought is that the heat would be too much for lexan.
It is the same glass used in the rear window. Its not called safety glass (that is what windshields are made of and have a layer of plastic in between two pieces of glass, as I understand it). It is tempered (maybe) and designed to shatter rather than shear. Traditional glass will shear and results in what are essentially large knives when broken. Tempered glass (like side windows and rear windows) are designed to crumble into small pieces to keep occupants safe(r). I found the receipt and I paid $48 even. The shop is a local small glass and mirror shop near Athens, GA.
Would it be worth having the place near me ship it to you? I know shipping glass can be a pain, but it it's that much cheaper.... If you are using the Archie design chop, I can even bring my template to them if you like.
A place that will make a tempered glass window for $40 ? I can't even get anyone to CUT a piece of tempered glass around here for any price !
Because "Tempered" glass can't be cut. I'm curious as to what they sold to psychosurfer. On a side not, laminate glass can be used in the side, and possibly the rear windows also. I had a 61 Cadillac and it was factory flat laminate glass on the door windows. Had to have one replaced once.
Not sure how I can provide more info regarding the type of glass cut for the top chop car. The same shop made all the glass for the model A as well as the model T. All glass in question is flat and cut to a template provided. Happy to investigate if anyone can tell me how to check/photograph/etc in order to help the greater good here.
really like to know the fact of the matter. I also believe what you got is either safety plate or just plain flat glass. If it is Indeed Tempered, I want it !
Cannot see the edge of the glass in the Fiero. The shop spoke with Archie to use the same he installed in his top chop cars. His kids were often sold without the rear glass as it is cheaper to buy locally than to ship. I can see the edge on the Model A and T side windows (which is cut from the same material). I am sure it is not "regular" glass. Sadly, I learned this by letting one of the hot rod's side windows fall to the ground prior to installing. It shattered into very small pieces but not as small as side glass in a stock Fiero (maybe that will help).
