I want to invest in a good quality scan tool that will work on my 3800 swap fiero also hoping it will work on my modern cars as well. Never had one or used one so not sure what to get.
The HP Tuners scanning suite is excellent as you can see comparative graphs of how everything is operating. Ex: Instead of getting just one KR number, it is shown at all RPM's and manifold pressures. Same with fueling and timing. You also have the DTC readings and all sensor outputs. Check it out at www.hptuners.com . They have a downloadable "try before you buy" program that you can evaluate. Its not cheap and it works on a laptop but it is excellent.

This thing is more then just a scanner it is an tuner as well. looks complicated. If you purchase this for $499 is there anything else you need to buy for it to connect to the fiero? What are the credits for? do you have to continue paying to use the HPT suite? thanks for helping

The credits are for additional ECM/car licenses for tuning and/or extended attributes. IIRC, the $499 price includes a few credits, one of which you'll need to use for the 3800 SC. I don't think the Fiero is an option as it's originally a GM-ALDL car and not OBD-II. You'll probably need to use the license credit for the vehicle your engine came out of, if you can't select the engine directly. The ECM should have the VIN encoded in it, but you'd need a scanner to check what it is, if you don't have it written down somewhere…
What good is just scanning though, if you can't re-tune to fix it?
Does this allow you to tune as well or just monitor things?
For ~$30 you already know.
However, u can get a used DHP powertuner for $200 or just the hardware new from the supplier $260 and get someone to give you the software if u want to tune on the cheap.

I think starting with this would be a good option definitely an inexpensive way to get stared. Thank you for your responses and the link to the other thread I searched and never came across that one.
VCM Suite is the full-blown tuner/scanner setup. It starts at $499 for the standard version and enough credits to allow you to license and tune your own PCM - if you want to do that.
VCM Scanner is a scanner-only setup. It starts at $349 for the standard version ($499 pro version gives you the ability to log external wideband data). There are no credits associated with the VCM Scanner as it is unlimited use to scan anything that is supported.
Of course, the Bluetooth adapter + TorquePro app is the much cheaper way to go but I have found it is still a bit buggy on the logging side of the program. It does work, however.

AeroForce scan gauge is a good buy and I give it 2 thumbs up. Keep it in dash and use it to monitor whichever two PCM parameters you like (perhaps knock retard and ignition advance) and then if you have some issue you can select by simply pressing a button which othe parameters you like. for example. I was wanting to make sure my tranny was staying below 200 degrees. I toggled to tranny temp and watched it for a few summer days. gave me peace of mind that I was not running the tranny too hot.

AeroForce is a very good option as not only can you scan ALL parameters but you can perform a case learn too.
The ONLY downside is that you can't upload any logs for further review.
