I have just recently bought a 1987 Fiero GT. It has a 4 speed transmission and i was just wanting to know if it is best that i leave it as a 4 speed or should i get the 5 speed getrag? Is there any advantages of the 4 speed? And also when i drive it, it passes 6 RPM's and shifts normally, not forced or anything is it because it is measuring as if it has a 5 speed?
also the tail lights do not turn on when i turn the car on but whenever i hit the brakes the lights come on, what could it be? i have checked all of the fuses and bought new tail lights
If you want to restore the car to it's original state....you need the Getrag, because that's what it had from the factory. The 4 speed has a reputation of being fun around town, but high RPM on the highway....A change of transmissions should not affect the tachometer.

Unless it originally had an auto (or the 4-speed is original and it's actually an 86 GT and not an 87).
I guess we won't be finding you a 5th gear in your car..... (That actually happened about a year ago. A thread got to about a dozen comments and the OP realized that his car was really a 5 speed).
So do you want to know what your car was when it was new? Are you sure it's and 87? Does it still have a sticker on the left front wheel well? Can you read the letters on the sticker?
