I have a 88 V6 with a 5-speed right now. I am looking for more fun in the low end off the line but not super high rpm at highway speeds. What is my best option for a swap in. A fiero trans or otherwise.. I am open to all ideas.

In addition to that... there is the F23 option. More work involved just getting it into the car unlike a hybrid M282 or 4 speed...

The F23 was available with quite an array of final drive ratios... unfortunately, the only one with a GM Metric bell housing is the 3.94 version from the 2000-2002 J-body cars (Cavalier and Sunfire).

It is actually fairly easy to split the case of the F23, at least, easy by comparison to the Getrag M282... but the gearing options with a bell swap are as follows:

code:
00-02 Cavalier/Sunfire - Only F23 with Metric bell housing
Final 1 2 3 4 5 R
3.94 3.58 2.02 1.35 0.98 0.69 3.31

09-10 Cobalt Xfe (RPO FY1) Ecotec
Final 1 2 3 4 5 R
3.63 3.58 2.02 1.35 0.98 0.69 3.31

03-07 Ion, 05-07 Cobalt/G5 Ecotec
Final 1 2 3 4 5 R
3.84 3.58 2.02 1.35 0.98 0.69 3.31

05-07 HHR (09-10 has 3.94 FDR) Ecotec
Final 1 2 3 4 5 R
4.17 3.58 2.02 1.35 0.98 0.69 3.31

04-07 Saturn Vue - Blech! Ecotec
Final 1 2 3 4 5 R
4.41 3.58 2.02 1.35 0.98 0.81 3.31

You can't do both without changing transmissions, but a 3.4 engine swap will give you better low end punch.
