I have replaced my fuel pump twice already in my 88 GT and it is still making noise when car warms up. I was doing some research on line and I found that a faulty fuel pressure regulator can cause issues with the fuel pump. Can this be the source of my problems or have I been unlucky and purchased two bad fuel pumps? One pump was a Delphi and the other a AC Delco.
If it is unusually loud the regulator could burn it out if the pressure is too high and it's a cheap pump. Although normally, higher pressures result in a rich condition, the amount of additional fuel flow is proportional to the injector size, smaller injectors deliver a smaller % of excess fuel and may not necessarily give an ominous sign there is a problem. I did a turbo 1.8L swap into a Fiero years ago that had that problem. At near the end of my 30 mile commute going and coming my new pump would start to wind down apparently due to over heating from high pressure due to a bad regulator. A high quality non race fuel pump is not easily heard with the motor running and proper insulation.
I just installed a new bosch rotary upgrade pump from rock auto in a duke and can hardly hear it. I have one on order for my 85 GT I just bought and when I put it in I will remove the pulsator if there is one there, its not needed with the rotary pump.
I recently installed a DW 200 (255 lph) pump on a 3800 SC Series II project and it is very quiet. I also like the three year "no fault" warranty. For a $90 price this is an excellent pump IMHO.
