I have the passenger side axle shaft out of my 86 2m4 with the Isuzu trans. Measuring it, it is longer then the replacement I have to put in. But it says measure "compressed length". When the old one was removed I think I pulled too much from the wheel end and am not sure if that made it end up staying longer than when it was "compressed"?

Here is the new one:
Says 38 15/16" compressed length

Measuring my old one it looks like 40 1/8 while it sits on the ground, and the new one looks like 39 3/8. Is this just due to them not being compressed?
Any help appreciated, thanks.

Here are the two side by side.

The fiero axle is supposed to be 39 3/8" compressed. Here is the EMPI part # and dimension for the passenger side fiero axle.

What is the part # on your axle?

Over time aftermarket axle manufacturers look to reduce the number of axles in inventory and substitute axles for each other. That has already happened on the DS where the 22 1/2" axle was replaced with one that is 22 11/16"
DS Fiero manual axle EMPI #:

This is kind of confusing fieroguru, I looked up axles at Oreillys too and they have one that says its 38 15/16" like this one, and one that says its 39". But none that say 39 3/8?

Napa's only one they sell is 39 inches.

I guess my question is does 38 15/16" pose a problem, or is it safe to use?

My guess is that over time, they have started switching out the axles and now offer the shorter ones.

You new axle is within 1/2" and the tripods normally have about 3/4" of play in either direction, so it will "probably" work if your engine/transmission are stock and mounted with stock mounts.

compressed length means inner tripot is compress so spring won't mess w/ measurement.
