Have stock 1988 GT 2.8L, 5 speed. Clutch does not engage until it is about 1 inch from the floor. Once engaged it shifts fine. The clutch pedal is even with the brake pedal (I'm not sure what that means in terms of having the clutch work properly- hopefully someone can explain). The fluid level is at the indicator line on the master cylinder reservoir. This line is fairly low on the reservoir. Should it be filled all the way to the top of the reservoir? I checked under the dash and did not see any leaks. Also, checked around the slave cylinder and didn't see any leaks, although I did not pull back the rubber boot. Slave was replaced about 10 years ago. I have read that the slave rod is supposed to have about 1 inch of travel. Where does one measure from and to? Sorry for all the simple questions, but this is my first venture into the Fiero world. Any help diagnosing this problem would be much appreciated.

... ???

Where do you want the pedal to be when the clutch engages?

Does your clutch disengage sufficiently?

I agree with Patrick questions. Usually the clutch is a little higher then the brake pedal, but if it's working don't touch it.

I would say my clutch engages/disengages around the same distance but my clutch is a little higher than the brake. I would check my clutch pedal and see if its bent they are known for that but if it's working leave it alone.

Let's assume that as you push the pedal it is disengaging, and as you let the pedal up in engages at about the same place. A combination of factors could have this happen 1" from the floor.

1. bent clutch pedal assembly
2. Worn pressure plate
3. Bent or worn Master Cylinder pushrod..(banjo).
4. Air in the line

If you have many miles on the clutch, it just may be getting near the end of it's useful life. I would add fluid so it is clearly above that low line. To check the slave cylinder travel, measure the distance the lever moves where the slave pushrod hits the lever from the transmission...(2 people required).

If your clutch and brake pedals are even, then either your clutch pedal and/or master push rod are bent. I would suspect bent clutch pedal as that's the most common issue. Should be approximately 1" higher than brake pedal. Order a new pedal, and bushings from fiero store. If you search here there are some good write ups on pedal replacement. The pushrod loop has to face a certain direction as well, and will effect the system if upside down.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I will spend some time today looking at the components mentioned and try to determine what is causing the clutch to be the way it is.
