I have an 87 Fiero GT 5 speed getrag .Shifts a little rough but the real problem is , it is really hard to get into 5th gear and reverse. It takes all I have to get the lever to push to the right enough to push into gear, any suggestions?
1. Take apart the center console and clean the shifter mechanism. Look for little things that may be jammed in there. 2. Detach the cables at the transmission. Run the shifter through all the positions. Make sure everything moves easily. The 'select' (side to side) cable can get sticky. 3. Test the arms on the transmission to see if there is any resistance at 5th or Reverse. 4. Position the shifter and the Trans levers at 3rd gear. Re-attach cables.
