How much power should the HVAC fan draw? In other words...is this normal?

It is an 84 Fiero, Duke/Auto. It has a 78 amp alternator (specifically, this one: http://tinyurl.com/qe4zu4o ). I will be doing a 105 amp CS alternator conversion this week...so that should resolve any power issues if that is the problem here. But, I thought it was odd that the HVAC fan seems to have significantly more draw than the headlights (brights were on too, BTW).

If this is NOT normal, I assume an HVAC fan replacement should be put on my list?

heater/ac and radiator fans and a/c clutch draws allot...

You likely have bad grounds and/or power. Just adding the alt can hide wire problem for a while.

84 is worse for power problems. Alt power and others goes thru C500.
I would remove alt power from C500 etc. The C500 pin is easy to get burn out after ~30 years.

And that is why I was questioning this now. I am not changing it to get more amps...I chose more amps because I need to change it anyway. It is being changed because of a bent shaft that is eating my alternator belts.

I didn't mention it in the video, but the radiator fan was on also. So...by the look of it...I really may just be overloading the alternator, and the HVAC fan is enough to put it over the edge. I would never have guessed that little fan used that much power. Further research has suggested 15-20 amps is normal for the HVAC fan...which would double what the headlights use.

I will double check grounds...but I am pretty sure there isn't an issue there. I have already upgraded the power wiring.

Thanks, Ogre.

I know everyone likes an update....

Replaced the alternator with a 105 amp CS130 from an 88 GT. Other than swapping the pulley, and re-wiring the plug, it was a direct fit. All issues are solved.

If the bearing in the fan motor is going bad, it will also draw more power.
