Hello all. New problem. My battery stopped charging consistantly. When it charges, everything runs great... But for no reason at all, on occasion it will just quit charging like the alternator is bad. Unfortunately, whenever I go to check what's causing it, it starts charging like normal again.

2.8 L Original V6 in 1986 2M6. No electrical modifications.

Checked so far:
Pulled alternator, all connections good and clean/tight. Bench tests perfect at 13.5 - 14 V.
Connector from alternator to battery checks good continuity with ohm meter.
All engine compartment Fuse links to battery fine. All dash fuses good.
Battery tests good and holds charge. Battery connectors fine and clean/tight.
Engine ground including alternator housing is good. Chassis ground is good. Both checked with volt / Ohm meter.
Gauge pod functioning fine, "Volts" light works fine. (The gauge actually works well enough to where it was the first indication of the problem).

Like I say, when it works it's fine. Good strong charge, lights not dim etc. But when it quits charging, it goes quick. Battery discharges rapidly like a dead alternator, and I've barely made it home twice. But then I can't get the problem to repeat itself at home once I get it started again. Very frustrated.

Well, at this point I'm open for suggestions. I can't afford to just start swapping things I don't know to be bad, and you guys always seem to help me find the gremlins. Thanks!

Have your checked the main battery connector box right by the battery ? Also use a test light to see if the fusible links are good while wiggling them around. Ive found lots of wires corroded or broken inside insulation that you cant see.

Check all the wires to the main bus terminals under C500.

That alternator could still be bad... Alternator's with intermittent problems can be hard to test for on the bench.

Check alt wire...
See my Cave, Alternator Sense
Iffy S501 etc will likely pass ohm meter but Intermittent in use.

Yeah, the bad alternator is where I'm headed if all else fails. Wish it weren't so hard to remove. I have checked the fuse links with both an ohm meter and a test light. The connections on the block all seem good. Is there a way to remove the alternator without opening the brake line? really getting sick of bleeding the system. Also can you recommend a good alternator that won't break the bank? I haven't been impressed with what autozone and Advance have to offer.

My daughter's '86 GT has been doing the same thing. Sometimes not charging the battery.
The battery is about a year old.
I replaced the alternator (took it out the bottom by removing the tie rod - no brake line removal) two weeks ago.
Thought the charging problem was solved.
Then yesterday the car wouldn't start. As before, she got a jump-start and it seems OK.

1. replace w/ CS130... See my Cave, Rabid-Wombat's CS-130 Conversion for 85-87 V6.

2. No starting then check starter, grounds, bat cables. missing starter heat shield won't help.
