Bought this 86 se with a 4.9 carburated engine in it..it runs great..I pulled the posi terminal off while running and the car stalled..it has a brand new alternater.where do I go first to attempt to fix this charging issue? Thanks c-note
Well....I have a brand new battery in the car. And after a few days of starting and starting tge car it went dead..I jumped the car and removed the positive cable from the battery. The cc ar stalled..if the charging system was working it should've stayed running..rite? Their is no computer in this car
if the charge light bulb is bad it wil not charge... check with a volt meter and see if you get power to the exciter wire when you turn the key on it is a switched wire . ------------------

I second this. When I did my 4.9 swap, I was very careful with the wiring; double, triple checked everything but when it started, there was no power coming out of the alt. After studying the prints for both cars I found that I didn't have a battery light in my instrument panel and for lack of this circuit, the alt wouldn't charge. That being said, I don't believe that the computer has anything to do with the circuits functionality and my issue it for the stock Caddy alt. If you have a different alternator adapted to the 4.9 then things for you could be different.
Pulling the pos. terminal off the battery forces the alternator to immediately take the full load of all electrical running systems in the car...kinda like kicking it in the nads. I used to leave my car running when jumpstarting others cars and found that the alternator would often fail in short order. By adding the cables, my alternator would have to immediately try to both start their engine and charge their dead battery...especially if the jumper cable connections were not 100%. Now I will only jump start a car with mine engine turned off and key out. It helps you to know if your connections are good too. Haven't lost an alternator since.

i can honestly say i own a fiero, and i have a stack of repair bills to prove it,,,always something,, anywayszzz new alternator ,,got it all kinda charge now,,great rite, well not really a parade just yet,, now my darn head light wont pop up, its not grinding or anything its just dead, although the light bulb comes on ,but the thing wont pop, is their a way to check the motor before i buy one one here, thanks again everyone><><>< c-note
I know everyone does it (myself included), but disconnecting the battery cable on a running car can cause damage to the rectifier circuit in the alternator. This can reduce the life expectancy of your alternator...
