What parts do I need for the "emergency kit" that members refer to on the forum? I would like to put one together for trips and peace of mind while traveling around. Though I don't want a trunk full of parts, at least my wife does'nt. Thanks again for your help.

I have a full tool box and also a parts box including cap, rotor, wires, coil, ignition module, I even carry a complete distributor,. Make sure you have ratchet and sockets for all nuts and bolts. I think the module needs a 5.5 mm socket. I do lots of long distance traveling. I carry a Haynes manual when I'm on the road and a card showing jacking points if the car has to go to a local garage.

Last year was the first time I needed tools and parts as my rotor broke while up in Iowa on I 84.. The tools and parts have come in handy to help others.

I used to live in the Rochester area prior to moving to Florida in 2003.

1. Cell phone
2. knowledge to fix stuff
3. What breaks while we drive down the road.
a. tires - make sure spare has air. they do lose air each month/year
b hoses. have a chunk of heater hose and a piece of radiator hose size pipe and two clamps to patch a hose leak. Small jug of water - to drink or pour in radiator- for road trips.
c. jumper cables - once in awhile you have a dead battery somewhere.
That is all that I can recall happening to me - except back when cars still had points ( My firts car was a 69 VW bug)

What did I miss.

Besides the tools/parts that others will mention, I include in my 'kit':
AAA club card (or Good Sam's club card)
Visa (or MC/AMEX/Discover)

Now, the bare minimum I take with me everywhere, even just to the store, is a new ignition module and tools to change it. I had three blow out in one day. But not any since that day. I still have a new one in a ziplock baggie in the trunk.

When I drove to Mississippi and return from Colorado and later drove out here to Oregon, I packed a complete set of Harbor Freight metric wrenches, sockets, my good digital VOM, fuses, most of my electronics hand tools from when I was in the industry, small jumper wires with alligator clips, two shorter jack stands I managed to arm wrestle into the trunk and a good, sturdy short four ton bottle jack pluss as set of good jumper cables.

My fuel pump bit the dust in Corinth, MS and I bought a set of cheap but good ramps from Autozone as well as the fuel pump, some rubber fuel line and a bottle of beer on the way back to the car. (I no longer drink but it was HOT that day) I found a cheap five gallon gas can too and helped a friend to some of my fuel.

The car would start and run enough for me to back onto the ramps and I jacked up the front enough for me to take off the bolts holding the gas tank. The jack stands and ramp gave me enough confidence to drop the tank. The VOM helped me trace a broken ground wire and the tools enabled me to do the work. I am sure there are other things i'd need in another situation but these worked for me.

The car has run great since then and I haven't needed any repairs but I keep my "pick and pay" tool set in the trunk just in case.

Edit: Now I wish I had used my Triple-A card in Corinth but for some reason, I didn't consider it. That card has helped me at least four times.

Obviosly just missed previous thread but still grateful for your responses. Will definitely add some parts to my list for breakdown times. Question though, what company do you guys recommend for ICM and COIL aftermarket? Thanks again for all your input - great help to keep cruising!

Get an LED Flash Light! I once changed a flat tire with matches, at night! Keep in mind, there is usually an auto parts store close by. If you want to go to the trouble, keep a list of tow companies and auto parts stores along your distination route (you could allso dial information on your cell phone).

There are a lot of Fiero owners out in the woods who would take exception to that.....and a lot of parts in the auto parts store are not worth installing.
