My '86 GT is making a knocking noise somewhere in the back as I turn right.Too hard to tell if its on left, right or center. It will be slow and loud as i'm turning and speed up along with the tire rotation and get quieter as I straighten out and go completely away.It doesn't do it turning left. I took it to a mechanic and he replaced the rightside caliper and rear axle hub but it made no difference at all. The old bearing looked and turned good in the old one. I'm thinking maybe the Halfshaft drive axle? Maybe the CV or Inner Tripod joints? The only other thing is I did convert it over from a manual to a automatic transmission about 15,000 miles back(about 10 years ago) so my wife could drive it. Don't remember what parts came from the '85 gt parts car beside tranny, shifter and radiator and which they kept original.thanks for any info.

The cv joints don't change angle when you turn like on a FWD car, guess it could be but I doubt it. I would check careful and see if you may have a broken motor mount. Larry

My '88 GT is doing the same thing since about 2 cradle pulls ago.
It sounds sort of like an axle rubbing against something stationary, but I haven't found any rub points.

I'm very interested in your trouble-shooting replies.

I went over to check on the mechanics progress and he told me he thought it was the exhaust cause of a bad hanger and it maybe hitting the frame. I told him it was a hard knock like a hammer on the frame or motor/tranny not like a hollow pipe hitting the frame. He then grabbed the right rear tire and it had a little slack in it so now he's gonna replace the ball joint.I'll let everyone know what finally fixes that bangin noise. Thanks for the input on that motor mount by the way.Gonna call him now and ask him to look at it also.
