I'm having some trouble trying to pop out the driver's side axle from the automatic transmission. I got the passenger side out, but the driver's side does not have as much room to get a pry bar in, and so far I have not got it out. It started to rain, so I will give it another try tomorrow.
Last year I popped out the axles on a '88 5-speed, with out much problem, when I did a clutch job.
I dunno if this will work on an 88 but this is what I have heard...
Home made slide hammer type tool. Wrap a chain around the axle then wrap the other end around the head of a sledge hammer. A little slack and swing the hammer out. Should be enough to pop it. You may need a helper to catch the axle. I think I read it in Ogre's Cave. Not sure though.
