Hi I am just wondering if anyone else has this problem and is there a fix.

the car is a 87 2.8 gt and when the engine has warmed up the needle never stays still it always twitches between 700 and 800 rpm

is this a common problem or should it stay absolutely still at 800.

all opinions welcomed

Could be the Tach filter www.rodneydickman.com or the normal fluctuations if the car's idle is wandering. Does the engine's idle also "wander" up and down?

no - it idles at around 1300 (not near the car I'm guessing) to warm up and then drops down once the engine has warmed up - normal operation

If the tachometer is irratic like twitching and dropping off than your tach filter is suspect.

If the tachometer is just plain off but moves up and down in concordance with actual engine speed than the tachometer itself is suspect..
