Hey Guys, I'm the owner of a 1988 Fiero with a V6 and 5 Speed transmission, and I'm having some odd electrical issues. My alternator seems to only want to work on its schedule. Some days it decides to work and I get a steady 14.6 volts and other days it doesn't charge at all and it doesn't matter if the car is hot or cold. It has done this with three alternator now and all the alternators tested out fine. On the odd occasion my gauges will read about 14 volts but the volt light will be on. I'm looking for some suggestion on where to start my hunt.

I have replaced the main ground wire to the battery and the smaller one to the frame, I have cleaned all the wires connecting to the alternator, put on a new belt and tightened down, volt light works fine.

Thanks Robert

I think in most cases the alternator warning light is part of the circuit that turns on the charging. You may want to check that, I think you can also jump the connector to turn it on. Larry

That being the usual culprit was the first thing I checked and has been replaced and is in good working order. I'm not sure if 88 use the lamp to excite the alternator or not (maybe someone could clarify that)
