I have a 1986 Fiero v6 automatic with 38,000 miles. It had been in storage for 10 years. There is an intermittent problem that seems to be fuel related. On occasion it will lose power by not die completely. When this happens, the whine from the fuel pump gets much louder and occurs more on hot days. Shutting off the car for a few minutes will cause the problem to go away for a time. The time it takes for the problem to return will vary from 5 minutes to half an hour. I have cleaned the tank and replaced the fuel pump and the fuel filter to no avail. Anybody else experience this problem? Any thoughts?

Could it be a partially clogged catalytic converter building up back pressure? Does the fuel pump still whine when this happens?
