How do you get the plastic "knob" on the end of the switch off? I want to replace the boots on the switch. Tried light prying and pulling on it with needle nose but it refuses to give. Anyone done this before?

Another thing, my door ajar lights don't work so I removed both the switches and they both have only one wire attached, a black one with a red stripe. And the switch takes two other wires that I don't see. From the looks of the terminals on the switch they look as if nothing has ever been connected to them. My car is an '85.

The nut around the switch comes off so you can replace the rubber boot.

Edit to add that the ground is through the frame.

Thank you for the reply. It didn't look as if the nut would come off over the plastic knob but if it will that's great.
