I'm getting ready to install a new clutch in a stock '88 GT.
It seems AutoZone, O'Reily's and Advance have standard $99.00 clutch kits available.
Are these worth getting, or are there any performance clutch kits available? The above stores did not offer any performance clutch kits.
The main reason I am asking is that I have a '87 GT 5-speed, that is a daily driver, that I purchased last year. The clutch seems good at take off, but during heavier, but not really hard acceleration around 2500-3000 RPM, the clutch seems to slip until I let off on the throttle. Maybe it's just getting worn.
I don't want to put in a new clutch in the '88 and have that problem.
Thanks for the help.

If you think you are going to drive your car a little harder than the average guy, I would recommend the Ram HD clutch at the Fiero store. A little more money, but it seems to do well under stress.....
I've been using LUK clutch assemblies from Pep Boys for about 16 years. I do a lot of playing in the mountains and they hold up well, even to my 3.4. I don't do burnouts or slamming gears, but the clutch gets a very rigorous workout in the mountains.
I have the Centerforce dual friction clutch in my 88 Mera with the Miller Woods stage II turbo. Exceptional clutch. Light pedal pressure. Pedal engagement is excellent. A top quality clutch in my opinion.

I purchased a mid grade clutch and parts from the Fiero Store. When the car was at the shop the throwout baring bushing etc was all replaced. Once it was apart, I had all stuff replaced.
I have used LUK clutches on three Fieros and have had good luck with them. They are very reasonably priced too. Last one I got from Pep Boys was about $110 including pressure plate and TO bearing.
If you are looking for a good clutch at a good price...allot of guys on PFF have used the SPEC performance clutch, so I did too, and have been really pleased. I first put a stage-3 kevlar 6-puck racing clutch behind my Getrag with my stock 2.8 on my late-run '86 GT (basically an '87.) It was a little much (a little jumpy) for the 2.8, (had to rev it to keep from jumping) but planned on doing a 3.4 swap, and when I did, it was perfect...smooth as silk. For a 2.8 I'd go with a stage-2 for smoother action and plenty of grab. Crazy thing though, the SPEC stage-2 is more expensive that the stage-3!...? If you plan to do a 3.4 swap I'd go with the stage-3. My son put a stage-2 Beck and Arnly in his '65 GT and that was really nice, but he paid over $100 more too. There are allot of SPEC clutches behind the 3800 swaps too, and they work really nice! Lots of nice clutches out there, but think the SPEC is the best bang for the buck!...?
One more thing...Every one knows a Center Force is one of the best clutches, but they are also one of the most expensive, that's why I recommend the SPEC. Whatever you choose, just don't choose a replacement (4-spring) clutch, get a heavy duty (5-spring). Also, shop at different suppliers for the best prices. Fiero Store has good products, but expensive! I saved over $100 on my SPEC. BTW I've been using my spec for going on 4-years. you can see my one and only drag and speed shifting on my u-tube video, right after I installed it on my 2.8. But, like other guys, I don't get on it much, although, it's there if I need it! Speed shifting is bad for Getrags I found out. The synchromesh gears don't like it...lol!

All the clutch kits that I can get easily in a short amount of time by the local parts sellers, that are either in stock or at their near by warehouse, are all four spring discs.
Even the LUK clutch at Pep Boys have four springs. Those spring are just used for dampening, correct?
Is it worth special ordering a clutch kit, which would take a longer time to get, to be able to get a five spring disc?
I had better cancel my clutch recommendation. My RAM clutch came apart at 40,000 miles. Stock 2.8 Formula. The center of the disk was held together with 4 rivets.....which sheared off over some time I presume. the next clutch will be a LUK.....which is what I will need I guess...

Yes, I know this thread is two years old... but my response still applies.
I bought a LUK 04088 clutch kit from RockAuto for $70.79 last year for my '88 Formula (as discussed HERE). This car is my daily driver plus I autocross it. I drive it hard. The clutch is working just fine.
Make sure when a clutch is replaced that the flywheel is resurfaced as well.
Seems to me that many people like to spend way too much money on a clutch for a stock 2.8 powered Fiero. As can be seen in the post above, extra expense does not guarantee extra durability.

I know of several people who use and like the LUK clutches, who drive them fairly hard in the mountains. Never have heard of a failure other than having one just wear out, over time.
I have the 9.75" Ram clutch (P/N 94007) from the Fiero Store bolted to my 4.9. I like it just fine, but it would seem to be overkill for a 2.8. I'm not sure if that's the same one that experienced the "fractured rivet" failure posted earlier in the thread. http://www.fierostore.com/P...7&d=103&p=2&lp=54007

The Spec Stage 2 in my GT had the release bearing collapse under the high pedal pressure required. I replaced it with a Bully Stage 3. Love it! High clamping but with easy pedal effort. Less stress on ALL the parts - including my left leg. More pics https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/129057.html

I don't think it is, it has a 4 spring disc not a 6 spring

I noticed that too....The Fiero Store description covers both 4 and 6 spring designs, so I have no idea what I got...this clutch was purchased about 5 years ago, and at that time there were both 9 1/8" and 9 3/4" Heavy Duty clutches available for the 6 cylinder. It appears that the smaller diameter 'Heavy Duty' clutch is now not offered for the 6 cylinder 5 speed.....so they may have taken care of any further problems.
