Correction: This bill already passed the Senate. It is on its way to the President's desk.
I'm pretty happy about this. Less so PBS and NPR, but definitely happy with the decision to defund USAID. USAID has essentially become a slush fund to promote Socialist/Democrat-leaning policies across the world, and in many cases... quite literally being a funnel from taxpayer to Democrat election coffers.
With NPR and PBS... there's a lot of programming that I loved on both. Back when I was a kid, I used to listen to NPR channels because they often had things like Space Today or that 15 minute space update that they'd do from one of the observatories. And of course on PBS... you have NOVA and This Old House (which is owned by Roku now anyway). Of course, I used to watch Sesame Street too... but something has definitely changed since I used to watch these channels.
Democrats have yet again, completely destroyed institutions that were loved by almost everyone. They almost completely destroyed NASA when Obama was president (turned JPL into the Center for Climace Science), killed the Space Shuttle Program prematurely, even before we had a replacement, laid off 1/2 the research and engineering staff at Kennedy Space Center (because he hated Florida) and hired 100s of ultra-liberal climate alarmists to do "Earth Sciences" at Goddard / NASA headquarters. They basically did this to the Department of Education, and now they've done it to PBS and NPR.
Every time I listen to NPR when I have to take a trip (driving) for work, the news reports, interviews, and everything is almost always an insanely liberal slant. They have extremely radical leftists talking about things that no one gives a **** about and are incredibly asinine. Like gender equity and trans rights, and all kinds of nonsense. It's in start contrast to the genuinely informative interviews they used to have on NPR, when it wasn't always politically based. Now literally everything they have on there, is in some way political, or part of a political narrative.
PBS, yet another example... they've even destroyed the PBS News Hour... which I used to enjoy watching, even through Obama's terms... and it just got really, really bad. This Old House now uses the term, "Primary Bedroom" instead of "Master Bedroom" because using terms like master bedroom is considered racist... all the way to Sesame Street pushing the trans agenda by having trans characters... this is not the kind of **** that nursery school and kindergarten kids need to be worrying about.
Once again... Democrats have infiltrated and destroyed an institution... and Republicans are faced with either trying to forcibly fix it, or just eliminate it all together. I don't expect PBS and NPR will disappear, but they'll definitely be removed from dozens of markets since they'll not be able to afford the reach they normally provide.
NPR and PBS will not instantly go away. They just won't get money from the federal government anymore. They still receive funds from the state and local governments. According to them 60-70% of their money comes from donations and corporate sponsors.
PBS has an original sin. It was created by the Nixon administration to kill NET, which was a private education network. NET was critical of the government so Nixon wanted to put it out of business and replace it with a network that he could control. Strange how so many problems we have today can be traced back to Nixon and LBJ.
