Clean them with wood bleach --- yes wood bleach
mix 2oz with 1 gallon of hot water pour into the containers and slosh around or let it sit for a couple minutes on each side then wipe the outside with a rag with the mix looks like new when completed. you can use the same amount in both containers.

When complete mix 1 oz of baking soda and warm water and do the same thing to neutralize the bleach that is left.

Wood bleach has Oxalic acid for the active ingredient. Same ingredient as barkeepers friend. Both are commonly used to clean stains from boats.
I find barkeepers at Walmart for a lot cheaper $2 vs $10.
I’ve never used it to clean the reservoir but might try it.
For anyone that does it, wear gloves.

I wonder if Evapo-Rust Thermocure would clean the overflow tank because it unclogged an aluminum radiator and a heater core like magic.
