While I did learn of this on my Valkyrie Motorcycle forum, it got me to thinking about application of electric paint to cars.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mH6oQbckCms

I'm sure it isn't cheap but one could really make your ride stand out. I wouldn't do it, I'm more of a bland sleeper type with all the goodies under the decklid or hood but, I can see how this could be a game changer on the show circuit.

I can just see being pulled over by the police and being told to turn my paint down because it's blinding surrounding drivers.

I predict new laws regulating this. Very interesting technology.

Very cool. I have EL gauges on my Fiero.

EL is bright, but not overwhelming, so I don't know what regs would come down on it if used on vehicles.

I caught it this morning when posted.

Avatar! It reminds me of the CG of the plants. That always fascinated me each time I see it.

Imagine how smooth a body panel could be? All your running lights/signals painted on instead of stamping out, or molding in a recess. Less parts, weight, and improved aerodynamics.

I can see this having a lot of applications and not all as wild as was demo'd on the video. Somebody could potentially get rich with this idea. Then again, I could be wrong, my last calendar idea hasn't gone over too well.

Don't have sound at the moment, did they discuss how well it would survive in the elements? Especially Sun and moisture...

Looks cool. A nice glowing red Fiero would be fun. Maybe one done up like lildevil's old paintjob...

Its clear coated over so just as well as regular paint. You just have to have a place where a wire can attach to the paint to power it, you could clear over that as well.

one of the car companies had that on their instrument cluster back in the 60's.
when it went bad, it cost $600 to replace.

buddy,
I suspect that $ figure would not be low now. I fully expect this would be pricey but, have you priced a good paint job lately? Just as an example, I know several Valkyrie and HD riders who have exotic paint jobs on their bikes. Some of them easily exceed $4K. I can only imagine what a complete Fiero or other car would run but, that doesn't mean it won't be out there. As someone previously mentioned, an electric Fiero would be pretty cool. Pretty sure I can't afford it but, I'm letting my rich Fiero friends know that I am available for adoption.

The only issue I can think of would be having lights the wrong color facing the front of the vehicle.

In most, if not all of the states that's against the law.

I bet that one is well over 4K, did you see the graphics, that must have taken an entire day to do just the tank. crap that is a lot of work. Now just a plain color and no graphics would probably be cheap enough but add on all that graphic work and you are talking about one dam expensive paint job.

edit to add for our more well off members who might be interested in something like this,

I wouldn't want the graphics or at least nothing any where near what was on that tank but, wouldn't it be cool if you could adjust the brightness of your "electric" paint as you drive down the road. Put out a glow.

I can just hear some kid asking Dad, what's that glow coming up from behind us and then watching his face as that lit up FIero passes.

Oh I can see it on a helmet as well to make you more visible to the people who never see bikes on the road, now that with a skull painted on it would make you very visible, but make you a target by those zombie hunters.

Well now, that's something I hadn't considered. Hmmm

Theyd probably only let you turn them on (legally) in parking lots anyway.
"Distractions" and all that hubub.
