If you work for Amerigas I apologize but your company sucks. I bought a house in March. The 500 gallon buried propane tank that runs my furnaces, water heater and range is owned by Amerigas. The previous owners never purchased the tank. They would not allow us to purchase the tank when we bought the house. We had to be a customer first. So we signed up and filled the tank last year in March. We have a very energy efficent house we did not need a fill until now so I called for rates....$3.70 a gallon. Seriously the national average is $2.50. I ask why so high, they said I didn't fill up enough.....excuse me? So if I have an energy efficient house and am conscious of how much propane I use and keep my house coole rin the winter to save energy and a buck or two you will charge me more when I fill up and remove any and all financial benefit to being energy conscious? Ok so why don't you remove your tank? That will be $1000 minimum and i tmight happen 5 months from now. Ok can I buy this tank from you now? Nope you need to be a customer for a year. How much will it cost in March. We won't know until March. By the way don't you have introductery pricing for your first year as a customer? Oh shoot you are right I need to bring your rate down to $2.50 a gallon......thanks So I will be bent over on my next fill up? Yes you will.
Can you say price gouging? Come March that tank is mine I don't care what it costs those a-holes are gone. As long as they own the tank I can't shop around.
Ok venting done thought I would share. Oh by teh way if you own your tank a fill up is $2.50 a gallon it cost more when they own the tank because they have to do "maintenance"

I see you're right down the road from me. We have a 100 gal underground tank; only used for the fireplace. Once a year fill up at most. (Still using the heat pump and pellet stove.) We had Aero Energy when I first put the tank in [2001] but they owned it. After a couple of years they wanted me to buy the tank from them for around $1000. I wasn't buying enough propane. I got it them down to around $600. Aero was on the high side too. Calling around, AmeriGas was one of the more expensive ones. After you buy the tank (and have a receipt for it), try calling Conowingo Gas. The cheapest that I've found so far.
PS: Do you have/drive a Fiero. Haven't seen one around the area in years except on Rt. 1 for sale.

Bulk pricing, I get the same crap when I get more argon because I have a small tank and last time it cost me 55 bucks full tank, exchange, but it is a lot easier when I need to move it or be portable. But if I go with a rental over double the size it only cost me 10 bucks more, problem with that is its huge and I have to depend on a friend to help me go get another tank. I would never use a full tank in a year, not able to get behind the mask like I used to so I weld a lot less and use less gas. Its the same with electrical use, if I weld all day long, can't anymore but when I did of course I used more KWH but believe it or not I paid less on my electric bill. I know it makes no sense but that's the way they do it.

I have the same problem with Ferrellgas. I had my 120 gallon tank filled about a month ago and they were $1.25 higher than the local supplier. When the tank is empty, I am disconnecting it and dragging it to the front yard and telling them to come get it. Superior Gas will deliver a new tank, fill it, leak check and check my heaters for less than I paid Ferrell for 80 gallons of fuel. Also, the tank rental with Superior is less than half, so even if I don't fill up, I still save on the tank rental.

Yup, not a fan of propane for those reasons. Bad enough I have to pay "delivery fees" to have the nat. gas sent to my house through existing pipes....
Have you checked into switching some appliances to electricity?
You should dig up the tank and leave it at the end of the driveway and tell them to come and get it (yeah, it would cost, but it would be fun!).
Question, do you need to remove their tank to connect to a new service?
Yep I need to have them remove it. It is in the agreement I had to sign to even get service when we moved in. I have to pay to have them remove it, and I can not just bring in a second tank and run off that. They had me coming and going.

Wow. I have a local outfit and am on a budget billing setup. We have a 1000 gal tank and they come out occasionally and top it off. We pay a fixed monthly rate and settle up in the spring. In 12 years of this we have never gone over. Most years we get a free month. This fall has been cold, though, so we may end up having to pay this spring. We pay $1.50 - $1.90 / gal out here.

I misread your title as, "Anyone else hate Americans as much as I do?"
I came here to see if you were speed banned yet.
I pretty much hate us myself. We're comparatively lazy, un-involved, un-engaged, self entitled, obnoxious, fat, selfish, self absorbed, and just about every other negative thing one could imagine. But, that's what makes us Americans.

Now if the companies priced gasoline that way. The more you use, the cheaper it gets. I was watching the news yesterday, and one douchbag representative wanted to raise the federal gas tax, because it hasn't been raised in the past 30 years. For some reason, locally, gas prices have gone up nearly $0.50/gallon in the past week or so. It had gotten to ~$3/gallon, now it is $3.46-3.54/gallon.

Ours didn't go up that much, but did go up, leading up to Thanksgiving of course. Now I see them starting to fall again. Not as fast as they went up of course. Imagine that.

But what about our weaknesses, mj?

Can you not have an above ground tank ? Many around me have 250 gallon above ground tanks. Just "tee" into your service line and let their tank stay there for eternity.

When I bought my house in January 2012 it came with a leased 500 gallon propane tank through Amerigas. Filled it up at highly marked up prices to get me through the winter as I didnt have any wood cut for the wood stove. They tried multiple times to keep my tank full even though I told them I wanted to be on will call and have tried to get me for paying the lease claiming I didnt get any propane. Each time I got out of paying them anything, but as soon as I found a tank to buy I bought it and joined a propane COOP. Now I get better than market rates each year as the COOP prices it out for each years contract. Now if I could just get Amerigas to pick up their tank, it has been over three months. I am sending a letter at the end of this week saying if they dont pick it up by the end of the year I am going to keep it in lieu of storage fees for three months.
Look around to see if there is a COOP in your area for propane.

I don't know about in the east. Here in the middle the best time to fill up and get the best price is March-April. It's right after the heating season and before irrigation starts. I called Ferrellgas last week to check price and it was $1.99 to top off my 300gal tank. (only needed around 100 gal)
Told them I could wait for spring when it's normally $1.25 a gal.

My Ferrellgas fill up was $4.00 a gallon. I am done with them
