My daughter in laws civic wouldn't start today. She drove it to some store and when she came out it wouldn't turn. Her dad jump started it and took it to sears and theyre telling her it's the starter. I don't trust sears to do anything but oil changes and tires and even then I would expect to get ripped off lol Anyway I've never heard of a car with a bad starter starting with a jump start? My experience with a bad starter is you can jump it to you blow up your battery and if the starter is bad it isn't gonna matter ..lol Am I wrong?

it's an 89 honda civic btw if that matters

If jumpstarting it got it to start, I bet the battery is toast, especially if it doesn't turn over without the jump. If tapping the starter motor housing makes it start then it's the starter motor.

It depends on what they did to "jump" it. I agree, if it was just "jumper" cables to the battery, then the battery is probably toast. However if they "jumped" the solenoid, then it's the starter, the wiring to the solenoid or the ignition switch itself.

fortunately her grandfather got there before they did something stupid and took the battery back where it was bought.. They found a bad cell and replaced it for free. Like I thought it was the battery. Thats why you don't take your car for repairs to a place like sears. lol
