I plan on putting a shelf over my fireplace that holds my electronics. Above that will be my tv.

What could I use as a heat deflector so the bottom of the shelf doesn't get hot?

make something (a deflector) out of sheet metal. Angle it so it is higher at the front (the open side) and wider than the shelf is deep.....that will catch the hot air, and force it to move foreward and away from the electronics before rising. You could even go real fancy and make it double-wall with a layer of insulation in between, which would keep the top side 100% room temperature.

LOL, if you can score an old refridgerator or chest freezer somewhere, that will provide you all the raw materials you need (sheet metal, insulation, and screws) The only expense would be a can or 2 of high-heat paint, 20 bucks max for the project.

here are some commercial reflector shields

Those shields aren't exactly my style...

I'm also thinking of cutting a couple holes on both sides, the bottom ones will be vent holes with a mesh screen and the upper ones will have fans blowing out.

Personally, I would not put electronics in an enclosure, especially not anything that makes a lot of heat like a receiver or amplifier. Even a lot of computer equipment can get hot on their own if they are in an enclosure. My AT&T modem/router gets very warm. Have you considered just having them on open shelves instead? Is there a reason why they need to be enclosed?

Mainly to hide the lights from viewing and to keep the dust down.

I wouldnt mount those things over a fireplace.
You choices really are powered fans and or vent holes, but if they are sucking in hot air I dont see it working great.
Maybe powered fans pulling from the floor via a tube or something? Maybe in the wall? The TV would still be hot though.
If the TV is a newer LED at least it wont generate much of its own heat.

You could just light a fire and put a thermometer on the wall to see how warm it gets. It might not be an issue at all.

You could try some of this stuff:

http://www.thermopan.com/thermo-pan

Cheap, cut it with scissors, find it at home depot. I've used it for other projects.

Yes, over the fireplace is bad.
Cable/Sat STB etc makes heat that must move out of their case. Even devices w/ no vent holes need cool air.

output fans will be same or worse then no doors. Just look inside most PC as proof.

Fans that pull into the self and use filters for "positive pressure" for dust control.

Best is to Find somewhere else to store and if needed, use "relay."
Relay/Extender echos IR signal from remotes to whatever. Radio Shack, amazon, etc has them.
