Probably more due to simply opening up the crusted later than anything else.
Ya, could have been anything strong enough to get thru. Its why we banned any closed containers at the aluminum casting plant i worked at. You get a popcan or bottle with a bit of water in it submerged into the melt, it would be a bad day for all of us.
And for the record, no i wasn't interested

Similar results to when Stuff hits the fan. It ain't all it's cracked up to be.

Ditto, I had a short stint at an aluminum foundry and the first video they showed us during training was what happened when a pop bottle or water bottle fell into a full pot. I've looked on youtube and can't seem to find it but it was terrifyingly impressive.

Unfortunately it didn't make an impression on the 'transient help'. We used to have migrant Mexicans work there during the winter, when they couldn't work in the fields, and we had to constantly filter thru the scrap to be recycled as they would just toss trash in there. We didn't even permit 1/2 of that stuff on property, but they didn't care about the law, so why care about rules at work? ( and yes. 1/2 were illegal. our HR department wasted a lot of time dealing with that ).
In our case we didn't have batch pots, but a continuous melt that ran thru the entire middle of the plant from end to end, so the risk was even greater as far more metal was at stake. Enough to blow 1/2 the plant to the moon. ( far more efficient than batch, it was an injection molding process like you would use with plastic. .....just at 1500 degrees )

We used injection molding also, actually made the heads for Harley's. One of the molders got sloppy one day while changing a pot, crawled under the molder while in between pot changes to do "whatever" and a drop of aluminum dripped off of the tube above him. This poor unfortunate soul was wearing torn jeans that day (against policy) and that drop about the size of a quarter somehow found it. Instant 3rd degree burns all the way down his leg. The aluminum also made it into his boots and burned the crap out of his foot. Management made sure to take pictures while they were waiting for the ambulance to show new hires.

Before i started there we had a guy that stepped over the open 'trough' ( a common practice ) and slipped. He stuck his foot into the melt, all the way until it went over his boot. I guess the shock killed him. Bad day all around.
My grandfather worked in a foundry when he was young ( iron i believe, not sure steel was out yet ) and i guess a guy had slipped or something underneath a pot as it was about to pour.. he blocked the melt with one arm while he grabbed the guy by his shirt and flung him across the room.
Both survived but his arm was pretty messed up.

I'm still so transfixed on how violently that escalated. I wonder if someone did that unintentionally to an unstable volcano if they could cause an eruption?

Not at that scale.
